Introduction
Charlotte's Web is novel by acclaimed American author E.B White, about a pig named Wilbur who is saved from being slaughtered by an intelligent spider named Charlotte. The novel tells the story of a pig named Wilbur and his friendship with a barn spider named Charlotte. When Wilbur is in danger of being slaughtered by the farmer, Charlotte writes messages praising Wilbur (such as "Some Pig") in her web in order to persuade the farmer to let him live.
Impact
This story mainly evoked some thoughts in my mind - friendship, resilience, and new life. When the old sheep in the barn cellar tells Wilbur that he is going to be killed and eaten at Christmas, he turns to Charlotte for help. Charlotte has the idea of writing words in her web showcasing Wilbur's excellence ("some pig", "terrific", "radiant", and eventually "humble"), reasoning that if she can make Wilbur sufficiently famous, he will not be killed. Thanks to Charlotte's efforts, and with the assistance of the gluttonous rat Templeton, Wilbur gets to live on. However, as the time goes by, Charlotte grew old and could almost not spin. However, to allow Wilbur to win a competition, she eventually drew her last web to form more words which eventually took her life away. This not only shows the power of friendship but also persistence as Charlotte persevered with the last of her web to enable her friend from being slaughtered.
Wilbur repays Charlotte by bringing home with him the sac of eggs she had laid at the fair before dying. This also shows that friends help each other when in need too. When Charlotte's eggs hatch at Zuckerman's farm, most of them leave to make their own lives elsewhere, except for three: Joy, Aranea, and Nellie, who remain there as friends to Wilbur. These 3 new spiders, had characteristics similar to that of Charlotte. Hence, the cycle of friendship continues. This touching story about 2 friends made me realise that life is short and that to live a meaningful one, one cannot do without friends. For true friends will do anything to save each other from danger.
